Management 101
By: Mike Cohen on Jan 11, 2016 at 8:35:32 pm
Working in production, I started out duping VHS tapes and going on shoots to setup gear and learn my craft. Years later, I found myself informally in charge of video production, while we had a sizeable multimedia department not really reporting to anyone - they were mostly hired for a couple of big projects, reported to the project manager, and then just sort of moved from project to project.

Why *I* Don’t Catch my Drone
By: Douglas Spotted Eagle on Jan 8, 2016 at 5:19:37 pm
Recently I was asked When do you choose to catch your drone vs landing your drone? Catching a drone in midflight seems to be a badge of honor amongst some drone pilots and the reasoning behind it is baffling. It’s “so easy to do” there are even videos that teach drone operators how to catch Continue reading Why *I* Don t Catch my Drone...

UNDERSTANDING TURBULENCE
By: Douglas Spotted Eagle on Dec 31, 2015 at 12:59:10 pm
(also known as lee waves, rotors, and cross-winds) As sUAV/drones become more and more popular, it seems that more and more of them are striking the sides of buildings without the operator understanding why. “It was flying fine and all of a sudden it zipped up and into the side of the building.” Continue reading UNDERSTANDING TURBULENCE...

DECODING MILLENNIALS
By: Douglas Spotted Eagle on Dec 22, 2015 at 5:26:48 pm
Millennials this, millennials that, “we’re strategizing how we’ll reach millennials this year; they’re vital to our growth. “We’re holding millennial focus groups to better understand ‘these people’ for the future success of our company…” They are just so hard to reach because they re fickle, lazy, ignorant, flip-flopping, narcissistic, undependable people. Blah blah blah. Google “Millennials Continue reading DECODING MILLENNIALS...

For Fuc*s Sake…
By: Charlie Austin on Dec 14, 2015 at 3:25:30 pm
A couple days ago, Apple posted a job opening for an Assistant Editor to work in the Beats marketing dept. The skill set required included Premiere, Avid, ProTools, and Resolve. No mention of FCP X or Logic. Now, as this is for a position at Beats (Apple owned but a separate division) it s likely they have [ ]...

EP 250: Walker Stalker Con Atlanta 2015
By: Sarah Mason on Nov 6, 2015 at 3:04:40 pm
We went to Walker Stalker Con in Atlanta and it was incredible! Listen for our complete rundown of the festivities from The Walking Dead Experience, to Norman Reedus, Greg Nicotero, and David Morrissey crashing Andrew Lincoln's panel. We visited Senoia and saw the Woodbury and Alexandria locations as well as Carl's pudding house, the Claimed house, the Clear set, met tons of amazing Senoians. We partied into the night with hundreds of fellow fans, watched a sad flock of Falcons in the rain, ate awesome BBQ & got completely spooked at Netherworld. Thanks Walker Stalker Con and Hotlanta!...

Connection Point Fun-SFX Spotting
By: Charlie Austin on Nov 3, 2015 at 10:21:40 pm
Here s another of my infrequent, semi coherent tip videos. :-) For FCP X pros, probably nothing exciting here, it s just a little demo about using connection points to quickly and accurately spot SFX when doing sound design. People complain about audio in FCP X all the time, but it s actually my favorite NLE in which to [ ]...

2015 Chronicles: Under the Dome
By: Mike Cohen on Jun 11, 2015 at 7:30:47 pm
April began with a convention in Nashville, though not really. The conference was actually at the Gaylord Opryland Resort, known by most as the Biodome. If you have never been to a Gaylord, it is an interesting experience. Certainly an amazing structure. I know that they mean well, but these places are simply too big to be practical. But c'est la vie - you go where the business is.

By: Mike Cohen on Jun 11, 2015 at 7:14:59 pm
The very next week after LA, I had a two day conference in NY at the Grand Hyatt, attached to Grand Central Terminal. I love this area of Midtown NY with the juxtaposition of old and new architecture, some of the most iconic NY landmarks and easy access by train.

2015 Chronicles: Surgeons of the Caribbean 2: The Magic Cave
By: Mike Cohen on Jun 11, 2015 at 6:36:44 pm
If you read the 2014 entry on the Dominican trips, you will know that I document medical procedures performed by a group of US surgeons who travel to the DR. I had spent December and January preparing for this trip, including making sure everyone on the trip had booked travel and that we all had hotel rooms. Sounds simple enough but a 4 day trip with 7 people has a lot of details to keep track of. Not to mention meeting our driver at the airport and being totally unable to communicate. I should have paid attention in high school...

2015 Chronicles: The Big Apple
By: Mike Cohen on Jun 11, 2015 at 6:26:51 pm
I kicked off 2015 with a 2 day trip to NYC to conduct some interviews. I expected a spacious hotel suite, I got a Residence Inn just off Times Square. While some Residence Inns have a lot of space, this one, not so much. I was by myself so I carefully moved furniture around, including moving the tv wall unit into the bedroom and placing the coffee table on the bed, to free up enough space for a three camera interview shoot and lighting. Worked out ok but it was a tight squeeze.

How Long Should We Expect a Tape to Retain It's Data?
By: Tim Jones on Jun 8, 2015 at 10:38:56 am
Over in the Archiving and Backup-Up Forum, a question came up concerning expectable LTO tape longevity. Apparently there are a lot of folks out there making life expectancy claims that are not based upon any real use data. I'll try to visit what our real world, highly abusive QA lab sees in this post.

Roundabout synchronize of AV for multi cam edits: Premiere and Audition
By: Ht Davis on May 2, 2015 at 9:40:50 pm
Premiere... ...Audition... ...They do work together. However, Audition often works on the input for the beginning, or on the audio mix for the end of an edit. By that, I mean it usually creates a single mix to use in Premiere, or it allows you to clean up the audio from a video file, rendering the audio to a preview for use with your edit.

NAB Diary: Dust Storm
By: Kylee Peña on Apr 15, 2015 at 1:51:12 am
Today was an uncharacteristically windy day in Vegas. The wind created a dusty, almost foggy late afternoon that sent everyone running to the nearest cab or shuttle as they left the convention center for the day. Which is an oddly appropriate metaphor for the way product development seems to be happening for the end user.

NAB Diary: Be Nice
By: Kylee Peña on Apr 14, 2015 at 3:41:38 pm
Yesterday was the first day of the 2015 NAB Show, and appropriately enough I got too busy to write a blog. In fact, I fell asleep in front of my laptop. That pretty much sums up NAB for most people. Especially if they're me. (To my credit, it was well after midnight, and I'm from the east coast. I'm not THAT lame.)

(Woo.) I'll be talking to all the top companies and individuals working in video today, gaining insight into where the industry stands and where it's going.
